Divorcing couples must often decide who keeps the house. If the mortgage and deed are joint, then one of the parties must refinance to remove the other person as an obligor on the mortgage. With current mortgage rates in the 6% range, that means giving up the low mortgages in the 2-3% range common in 2020 and 2021. Some couples come up with creative solutions. In this Wall Street Journal article, a couple explains how they are keeping the house - but the former wife lives in an airstream on the property. This creative solution will not work for every family.
